My sister lives near a pretty seaside village south of Thessaloniki called Makriyialos. It is small and quiet, very traditional and old-fashioned, and it has a round bay framed by a narrow but lovely sandy beach. In the evening, the lights of Thessaloniki sparkle in the far distance like a kaleidoscope. Makriyialos, despite its size, is a busy little port because it has a thriving mussel-farming industry as well as an active fishing fleet.
