In Alsace there is a village called Turckheim. It has the charm of many French villages, with its cobbled streets, small shops and a fountain into which so many are anxious to throw their coins. This one stands out in my memory because of the lamplighter, who, every evening at 10 o’clock, strolls the streets in traditional costume, lighting lamps, singing songs and calmly announcing the hour. My father used to go wine tasting there and, as we were still a bit young for it (even by French st
