Mr. Willis Taylor, whose father is an honorary chief in the Brong Ahafo region, generously shared this (slightly adapted) easy bread machine version of sugar bread.

  • teaspoons regular or rapid-rise yeast or 1 (¼-ounce) packet
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon lemon or lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (such as canola)
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • tablespoons full-cream powdered milk (e.g., Nido)
  • ¾ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3 cups all-purpose or bread flour

  1. Put the yeast in a cup with 2 tablespoons of warm water and ½ teaspoon of the sugar. Set aside to activate.
  2. Put all the other ingredients in the bread machine in the order listed.
  3. When the yeast has begun frothing pour it on top of the other ingredients, using a spatula to scrape it out if necessary.
  4. Set the bread machine time for 1 medium loaf, medium crust.
  5. Remove loaf when baked and cool on a wire rack before slicing.

To make rolls or braided bread, set the bread machine for dough only and remove to shape the bread into other desired shapes. Bake in a 350 degree F oven until baked.
