Fasting is cheaper than this dish, but almost nothing else is. Go to your fish dealer (preferably one you’ve built up a friendly relationship with) and buy one small cheap fillet of anything. Ask for some large (small ones haven’t enough flesh) fish heads and trimmings to make a soup. This should melt the hardest heart and anyway fish dealers are often compassionate artists who worry a lot about the decline of fish-eating. Yours will probably give you some great, meaty trimmings left
