Cream pie is not a pie at all, but a cake baked in layer pans. Originally, it was probably baked in a pie pan. This recipe is typical of Fannie Farmer’s many cake recipes; accurate though she was about spoon and cup measurements, it was not until later editions that she added details on the size of cake pans or baking temperatures.
