Throughout the world folklore weaves tales on the theme of stone soup, that soup based on but one stone and the naïve generosity of village inhabitants. Most stories tell of an itinerant who places the stone in a large pot and proceeds to simmer a soup in the village square. Inevitably the locals, never very bright in these stories, come by and offer the visitor a scrap of bacon, a chunk of potato, a wedge of cabbage, all to add flavour to the soup made from his magic stone. When the mixtur
