Red beans and peanuts, enlivened with a splash of hot pepper sauce and curry, are the basis for this smooth and spicy Caribbean bisque. The name refers to the powers the woman who made the soup for me claimed to possess, along with the spirit of the hot, sultry and mysterious islands.


  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons


  1. Lightly sauté the onions and garlic in the oil. When softened and beginning to brown, stir in the flour and cook for several minutes, then add the beans and cook for a few more minutes.
  2. Stir in the stock, curry powder and bay leaves, then bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer over a medium heat for about 10 minutes, or until the soup has thickened somew
