I must admit that my interest in Brazilian foods was stimulated by a Brazilian film of several years ago about a cookery teacher whose no-good husband dies. In the scene that captured my attention she is preparing a Vatapa. The camera comes in for a close-up of the colourful ingredients, and as she describes the preparation she lovingly talks of her husband’s lips, how they always tasted of hot peppers after he ate this dish, and how she would never kiss them again.
