  • About

Saffron has long been associated with the south-western counties of Cornwall and Devon, where Avis Crocombe was born and grew up. But in the 17th century it was also grown in Essex, in Walden, which became known as Saffron Walden. It was said that, at harvest time, the streets would be purple with the petals of the saffron crocus as they fluttered from the carts laden with discarded flowers. Saffron Walden is the nearest town to Audley End, bordering the estate on the east
