Dating back to the early 19th century, this very plain pie is filling and cheap. It is best made with waxy potatoes that will keep their shape, but will work with a more fluffy variety if that is all you have. Plain though this pie is, it is nevertheless delicious. It is best served with gravy. Potatoes, which were introduced to Europe from South America in the 17th century, took about a century to become the staple food which they were across Europe by the Victorian era. T
