Of this curiously named dish, Blanche Rhett says in 200 Years of Charleston Cooking, “Its origin is as mysterious as the flavor of the dish itself.” Actually it’s only the name that is mysterious, but my guess is that mulacalong comes from the same Anglo-Indian drawer as mullagatawny soup, named from the Tamil molegoo and referring to the spices of an Indian curry.
