Back in the early sixties, about the time when I was first married, it was a regular treat for my husband and me to drive fifteen kilometres or so out of Yogyakarta along the Solo road to the neighbourhood of the great Hindu-Javanese temple complexes that rise out of the plain between Merapi volcano and the sea: Kalasan, Candi Sewu, and Prambanan itself, where now they dance the story of the Ramayana in the cool nights of June and July.
