There are several spellings of this word, though jota is the most used. Jote is the term in Friulano, and jota is often used in Trieste and Gorizia. There is a fair amount of debate about the origin of this name. Many people think it derives from the Spanish jota, which is a stew of meat and vegetables. The Spanish word probably had Arabic roots.
