This was my mother’s sworn recipe to battle every sort of cold and bug. She still swears by it. As children, we made do without the whisky. But it’s too good for illness alone, and is the perfect thing to warm up dreary winter’s eves.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon clear, mild honey
  • 25 ml/1 fl oz whisky

Method

Mix the honey and whisky in a mug or heatproof glass. Add the cloves, cinnamon and lemon juice, then top up with just-off-the-boil water and stir. Add a slice of lemon and sip as soon as it doesn’t burn your lips.
