Especially common in desserts of South American countries, dulce de leche has grown in popularity in the United States and is now increasingly available in grocery stores (check the international foods aisle). This sweet, thick sauce is made by heating sweetened condensed milk (the term literally translates as “candy of milk”), and its rich, decadent flavor and consistency are similar to caramel.
