L’Aperitivo di Victor

Victor’s Potion

Before we get into the recipes, let us start the juices flowing with a drink. This is our house aperitivo concocted by my husband when we were living in Milan, It has a beautiful coral red color and is smooth, fragrant, refreshing, and potent. Here is Victor’s description of how he goes about making it. Salute!

  • 1 part well-chilled Campari
  • ½ part vodka kept in the freezer
  • ½ part chilled, aromatic, sweet white wine, possibly Moscato Naturale from Piedmont, or a Late Harvest Riesling from California, or a German Beerenauslese or Trockenbeerenauslese, or a French Sauternes
  • A sprig of fresh mint
  • 1 part freshly squeezed orange juice, possibly using blood oranges, if available
  • A thin slice of lemon for each glass

  1. Combine the Campari, vodka, and wine in a pitcher, and stir.
  2. Add the mint, stir, cover the pitcher with plastic wrap, and place it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  3. Remove from the refrigerator, discard the plastic wrap, add the orange juice, and stir several times. Remove and discard the mint.
  4. Place a slice of lemon in each guest’s glass, and serve.
