Preheat oven to moderate (375°F.).
Place the shad in a heatproof baking dish and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Brush the fish generously with butter and place it under the broiler for about three minutes, until it is lightly browned.
Brush the fish with additional butter and bake for twelve to fifteen minutes, until the fish flakes easily when tested with a fork. Serve with lemon wedges and boiled potatoes.
