  • About

  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon aniseeds
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar

    1. Preheat oven to moderate (350°F.).

    2. Soften the butter. Add the soda, aniseeds and salt. Mix well and gradually blend in the sugar. Beat in the egg. Sift the flour with cream of tartar and stir it into the mixture.

    3. Shape the mixture into half-inch balls and place them on ungreased cookie sheets, not too close together. Dip fork tines into flour and press the fork into each cookie in a crisscross pattern. Bake for eight minutes. Cool on wire racks. Store airtight.
