  • ½ cup shortening
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup dark corn syrup
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 ounces (2 squares) unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts
  • ½ cup sifted all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt


    1. Preheat oven to moderate (325°F.).

    2. Cream together the shortening, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Add syrup and beat well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

    3. Add the chocolate and walnuts to the mixture, blending well. Fold in flour and salt.

    4. Pour mixture into a greased nine-inch-square pan. Bake for forty minutes, or until done. Cut into squares while warm.
