Whenever her son and his family come to visit in Squinzano, near Lecce, deep in the south of Apulia, Maria Andriani makes these cookies for them to take back to their home in the north. A couple of years ago, when he still had the sealed tin with him, her son saw a sign for a dessert contest in Treviso. He walked in, surrendered the cookies, and they walked away with first prize.
