Method

Mrs Lincoln’s Boston Cook Book (1891) is a practical volume, full of wise counsel and clear instructions. Only occasionally, as here, does Mrs Lincoln allow herself to brush in a background to her recipes. The result is so felicitous that one wishes she had done so more often.
