Afghanistan is a land-locked country and, as such, seafood does not feature heavily in its cuisine. However, the rivers teem with freshwater fish, particularly in the winter months leading up to Nowroz. Rainbow trout and brown trout are commonly found in the streams beneath the mountain ranges, and a type of barbel known as shir mahee is found in the waterways of the Hindu Kush.
