Okra is a summer vegetable in Afghanistan, grown throughout the countryside, including in my family’s province of Laghman. On hot afternoons before dinner, baamiyah, an okra dish, would be eaten alongside a cooling glass of dogh.
In Australia, okra didn’t used to be as widely available as it is now, and so on the occasions we had it at home, it always evoked memories of baamiyah cooked on summer days in Afghanistan.
