Batido de Trigo

Puffed Wheat Shakes

Once, when I joined other chefs for a benefit dinner and cooking class in Miami, we spent a day exploring Little Havana. One of the highlights was this frozen drink, which we enjoyed at a little place called La Feliz de Rey. It sounds bizarre: puffed wheat in a milk shake? But one of the chefs, Cuban-born Maria Manso, owner of Maria Manso World Cuisine in San Rafael, California, had fond memories of slurping it as a kid. You don’t have to be a kid to love it. For a real adult drink, splash a little rum over the top before serving. It’s breakfast cereal in a glass.

  • cups puffed wheat cereal
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • cups milk
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt

To Assemble

Combine all the ingredients in a blender. Process until smooth. Pour into 4 glasses and serve immediately.
