Although there is no question that apples were formed into tarts and baked between layers of dough as long ago as the Middle Ages, the first recorded use of the name apple pie was in late sixteenth-century England, with pie spelled “pye.”

The United States is now the country most strongly associated with pies, apple in particular, as evidenced by the common phrase “as American as apple pie.” My grandparents emigrated from Sweden to America (separately) at the end of th
