Although pumpkins are indigenous to North America, pumpkin pie, as with so many foods in this relatively young country, has an origin elsewhere as well. It is known to have existed in the early 1600s in England, where it was called pompion or pompion pudding. Pumpkin pies and other open-faced pies with soft fillings were referred to as pumpkin puddings early on in America.
