I met Dorli many times over the years at her family’s parties. She was always most charming and insisted that I make this celebration cake with her, the recipe for which has been in her family for at least five generations, so that I could put it into my book. Sadly we never got around to it before she died, but with great pleasure her daughter Kate, guardian of the recipe and the family’s chief cake maker, and I recently made the cake together.
