Poached pears, especially crisp asian pears, are one of my favorite fall and winter desserts. They’re simple to make, perfect for a family meal, and ideal for entertaining because they can be made in advance. Immersed in syrup made from honey and brown sugar and laced with galangal, star anise, and cinnamon, the pears turn out sweet, tart, and sprightly. Pair them with coconut ice cream for dessert, or slice them and serve them in a spinach salad with candied walnuts or pecans.
