My mother Concettina broke homemade, day-old Italian bread into this soup, and seasoned it with additional extra-virgin olive oil and red pepper flakes.
Bring the lentil broth to the boil. Add the broccoli stems and leaves, return to the boil, and simmer for 30 minutes. Add the pasta, and cook until it comes to the surface. Add the olive oil, salt, and red pepper flakes to taste. If you want a thicker soup, add additional lentils and broccoli. Serve hot with bread if desired.
