Switzerland, like many parts of Europe, celebrates St. Nicholas Day on December 6, and Grittibänz are the featured baked good to go along with the day. Although they originated in the German-speaking part of the country, today they are widespread throughout, and known as Bonhomme de pâte in French and Ometti di pasta in Italian.

Gritti comes from the German word grätschen which translates as “splayed” or “straddled,” describing the form of the legs
