The simple step of melting butter to a warm brown color and toasty flavor makes for a delicious and handsome frosting. Try this with chocolate cake or banana cake, as well as a standard yellow cake.

Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 3 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted

Method

Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, swirling the pan and stirring almost constantly. The butter should foam and bubble, and turn a lovely golden brown, but not burn. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool to room temperature.

To finish the frosting, combine the browned butter with the confectioners’ sugar and vanilla in a medium bowl. Beat with a mixer at medium sp
