The simple step of melting butter to a warm brown color and toasty flavor makes for a delicious and handsome frosting. Try this with chocolate cake or banana cake, as well as a standard yellow cake.
Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, swirling the pan and stirring almost constantly. The butter should foam and bubble, and turn a lovely golden brown, but not burn. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool to room temperature.
