This gooey pie, named for a play on the words banana and toffee, was invented in 1972 for the dessert menu at an English pub called the Hungry Monk. It has been a popular “pudding” on English menus ever since. The heart of the pie—a chewy, fudgy, toffee filling made from sweetened condensed milk—is very similar to the South American favorite dulce de leche.
