My daughters and I stood for a long time in front of the picture window at Winnie-the-Pooh’s Candy Kitchen in Disneyland, watching the candy makers as they threaded marshmallows onto skewers and then dipped them into thick, gooey caramel. They were lined up to cool—glossy caramel soldiers—waiting to be plunged into a big vat of melted chocolate. I find excess like this endlessly mesmerizing.
