  • About

Believed to have originated in Southeast Asia, ginger was a highly coveted import to the Roman Empire. It was already widely available in England in Anglo-Saxon times, and by the late Middle Ages, it was almost as common as pepper and was added to all manner of dishes. Since the eighteenth century, its culinary use has been primarily limited to baked goods, such as this simple teatime cake.
