For use as a guide when cutting the dough, prepare a template by tracing a paisley shape on parchment paper. Place the template on the rolled dough and cut around it with the tip of a paring knife.

  1. Bake the cookies according to the Gingerbread Cookies recipe 12–15 minutes. Let cool completely, about 30 minutes.
  2. Spoon one-third of the icing into a small bowl and add 2–3 drops of red food coloring. Using the tip of a toothpick, add a small amount of brown food coloring to make a maroon color. Spoon the maroon icing into a
