This isn’t like any barbecue sauce Bubba used to make. Not with ingredients like cardamom, coffee, and hoisin sauce. The recipe comes from chef Jake, my stepson, who likes to serve it with grilled grouper and rich meats like pork and lamb.
Heat the olive oil in a large nonreactive saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion, bell pepper, garlic, and ginger and cook until softened but not brown, about 5 minutes. Add the coffee, hoisin sauce, balsamic vinegar, cocoa powder, and cardamom. Increase the heat and let come to a boil.
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer gently, uncover
