The use of roses as decoration on Christmas trees is a very old one, perhaps because the Rose of Sharon was one of the Biblical designations for Christ. We know that one of the earliest recorded Christmas trees, from 1597, was ornamented with roses of paper and silk. Later, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these paper roses also found their counterparts in sugarwork and meringue.
