Most families have a version of this recipe, which makes the most of any fruit in season. Here the prunes and spices give an almost mulled taste to the autumn apples, which can be eaten on their own or chilled and topped with chantilly and chocolate curls for a more festive look. Fran suggests this as an excellent accompaniment to home-made muesli (just mix some assorted dried fruits, seeds, nuts and rolled oats with a spoonful of maple syrup and toast in the oven until brown), while I like to substitute 400 ml plum liqueur for the water as a warming, wintry treat.
