Grandmother’s Gingerbread

• 12oz plain flour
• ½ teaspoon salt
• ½ teaspoon

Sift together the flour, salt and spices. Dissolve the soda in the water and add this to the dry ingredients. Mix together the black treacle, butter, milk and beaten egg. Pour this mixture into the other ingredients and beat very thoroughly. Put into a well-greased eight by eleven-inch tin. Bake at the bottom of the oven set at 350°F, 180°C, gas mark 4 for forty-five minutes.
