Method

Combine the whiskey, simple syrup, and lemon juice in a shaker. Add ice, shake hard for 8–10 seconds, and strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass.

Top with the seltzer, then float with the port, for a Baxter version, or with the Campari, for an O’Brien version (see note).
