Churning homemade ice cream is traditionally one of the great American pastimes. It’s even better when the ice cream being churned is flavored with the all-American strawberry.

Ingredients

1½ cups milk
2⅔ cups heavy cream
½ vanilla bean

Method

Combine the milk and heavy cream in a large heavy saucepan. Add the vanilla bean and bring almost to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
Whisk the egg yolks together with 1 cup of the sugar until smooth and all the sugar is dissolved. Remove the milk mixture from the heat, remove the vanilla bean, and whisk 1 cup of the hot milk thoroughly into th
