Traditionally served at your family’s winter holiday dinners, this pudding will warm your heart.

  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing the baking dish
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup milk
  • tablespoons unbleached all-purpose flour
  • teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup pitted dates, coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup shelled walnuts, coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup heavy cream, chilled

    1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Grease well a 9 × 13 × 2-inch glass or ceramic baking dish.
    2. Cream the butter in a mixing bowl, gradually adding the sugar, until light and fluffy.
    3. Add the eggs, milk, flour, and baking powder; mix well. Fold in the dates and walnuts.
    4. Turn into the prepared baking dish and place on the center rack of the oven. Bake until set, 50 to 60 minutes.
    5. Serve slightly warm or at room temperature with a spoonful of the cream, whipped to soft peaks.
