Name: Homemade ‘Baked’ Beans
Yield: Serves 4 generously
Ingredients: 2 × 400-g (14-oz) tins haricot beans (navy beans), drained and rinsed; 1 × 400-g (14-oz) tin chopped tomatoes; ½ tablespoon sunflower or vegetable oil; 1 tablespoon tomato paste (concentrated purée); 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (use the vegan version if you need this dish to be vegetarian or vegan); 1 tablespoon maple syrup; 1 small red onion, very finely chopped; 1 garlic clove, crushed or finely grated (shredded); ½ teaspoon smoked paprika; ½ teaspoon dried mixed herbs

I love tinned baked beans on toast with lashings of grated (shredded) Cheddar cheese and a squirt of brown sauce. Even better are homemade baked beans, which you can easily change up with additions like chorizo and Barbecue Sauce or by upping the smoked paprika. As well as being great on toast, these beans are just as good served in a classic baked potato.
