Published in the 1963 edition, a version of this slice was a popular stand-by in our house. Mum made it very regularly for her children, grandchildren and then great-grandchildren. It was also her favourite way of using any jam that was left languishing in the pantry or a little bit past its best. Often it was plum jam because we had an enormous cherry plum tree in the backyard, and soon tired of the seemingly endless quantities on offer.
