Bagels aren’t an American invention. In fact, they originated in Poland and came to the United States with Jewish immigrants, later becoming a permanent fixture of the American breakfast table.

Ingredients

  • teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 4 cups (500 g)

Method

  1. Whisk 1¼ cups (300 ml) warm water into the yeast in a small bowl. Set aside until the yeast dissolves, about 10 minutes.
  2. Combine the flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the yeast mixture and stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. On a floured work surface, knead the dough until smooth, about 5 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a large bowl and cover wit
