Snow Peas with Radishes and Sesame

Radishes add a tulip-red twist and nicely sharp counterpoint to sweet snow peas. With a few minutes of cooking, you’ll have a festive dish to perk up steamed or broiled fish or meat. For a vegetable main dish, substitute ¾ cup toasted, chopped almonds for the sesame and spoon over scented rice tossed with mint or cilantro and scallions.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound snow peas
  • tablespoons white or black sesame seeds

Method

  1. Rinse peas. Break off stem end of each pea and slowly zip off the thicker side (where peas attach). Snap and pull the other end of a few pods to see if the batch needs double stringing, which some do.
  2. In large skillet, heat sesame seeds over low heat, stirring or shaking until fragrant and lightly toasted, about 2 minutes. Scrape onto plate to cool.
