When I was little, my uncle went on a trip for work and bought us a refrigerator that had a freezer. Everyone from our block came over to see it, to feel how cold it was. My grandmother had the idea of pouring bissap into small plastic bags and putting them in the freezer. When we got home from school we would suck on the frozen lumps of juice; it would run all over our uniforms, and my mom would get so angry with me and my sisters. Frozen bissap on a hot day transports me back to Dakar.
