Toritos are One of the best-loved of all Veracruzan institutions. I would describe them as sweet, heavy aperitifs made with the local cane liquor, or aguardiente.

Everywhere we went in Sotavento, people offered us a version of toritos like this rich milk punch made with peanuts or peanut butter. It is suave, very sweet, and unexpectedly potent. There are also toritos made (with or without the milk base) from an array of tropical fruits including guava, soursop,
