Taro, also known as taro root, is a thick hairy brown cylinder, with faint rings around the surface. The flesh inside is creamy white, often with lavender spots and lines throughout. Taro is available in many major supermarkets and in Asian and Latino markets. Look for firm taro and use it within a week.
