Slashing or snipping the crust of the bread helps it bake without tearing and gives a larger area of crust.
Use a very sharp knife or scalpel to make slashes in the surface of the bread before or after it has proved.
Use a pair of scissors to make snips in the surface of the bread just before baking. This gives a chevron effect.
